Looking for after-school activities?

Over one-half of Catalina Foothills School District middle school students participate in after-school enrichment activities and athletics offered through Community Schools.  Students can choose to join a school team, improve athletic skills, make new friends while learning something new or explore the great outdoors!

No matter what the interest, Community Schools offers fun and well-supervised after-school activities at Esperero Canyon Middle School!

BRIDGE FOR BEGINNERS

MONDAY - 2:45PM - 4:15PM

Bridge is fun. It offers the suspense of poker, the analytical thinking of chess, and the excitement of healthy competition. Bridge is social. It is based on communication and cooperation skills with your partner. It provides you with the opportunity to meet new people and make friends for a lifetime. Bridge is great for your mind. Playing regularly stimulates your brain and keeps your mind alert. An average bridge hand takes just 5-10 minutes to play- so the game is quick, fun to learn and rewarding. In this class, we will introduce you to the fundamentals of the game, and get you started on a lifelong journey of fun!

CODE YOUR OWN ARCADE

MONDAY -02:45 PM - 4:15PM

Students will create retro-style arcade games with Microsoft MakeCode Arcade. They will combine the power of coding with game design to enhance their programming skills and develop games inspired by classic platformers, adventure games, and more! At the end of the class, they will bring their games to life on handheld gaming devices to play and share with friends.

ECMS RUNNING CLUB

MONDAY - 2:45PM - 4:15PM

Join other running enthusiasts on the trails in our fun, non-competitive Running Club, where we forget the timing clock! The focus will be on endurance and trail running techniques. We will explore nearby Sabino Canyon on our daily runs of 3-4 miles. Running experience is required - students have to be able to run a minimum of 20 minutes comfortably, without a break. Sportsmanship and participation will be emphasized. Well-fitted running shoes and a water bottle are required.

Our after school strength and conditioning class for middle school students is designed to teach the balance between effectiveness, safety, and age-appropriateness. The objective will be to introduce middle school students to basic strength and conditioning exercises, promoting overall fitness, athleticism, and proper technique. This class will help students get ready for the athletic seasons later on this year for wrestling, basketball, volleyball & track!

TAKE 2! MURDER MYSTERY PLAY

CASTING CALL!!!

It's 1924 and the party at Mornington Manor promises to be the social event of the decade! Join our eclectic cast of characters as we try to solve a good old-fashioned murder mystery. Set in the 1920s, this play is full of suspense and humor. You are sure to have a "Roaring" good time as you discover the motives behind the possible murderers. The party will be full of suspense, humor, and of course lots of DRAMA. Performance on the last day of class.

PHOTOSHOP & GRAPHIC DESIGN

WEDNESDAY - LATE START - 7:30AM - 9:00AM

Learn the in’s and out’s of Photoshop and basic Graphic design with Mr Jess! Photo manipulation, photo enhancement, photo restoration and page design will be a few of the techniques taught during the quarter using the most current Adobe Photoshop software. While this can be a stand-alone class, the student could pair it with Mr Jess’ Photography (Wednesday AM) to post-process their own images!

• Computers will be provided for use during the class.

• If students would like to save their work weekly/quarterly, please provide your child a flash drive, SD card (or similar) with a minimum 32gb of storage.

CHESS CLUB

THURSDAY - 2:45PM - 3:45PM

Students build strategy and play chess, and various chess games. Opportunities for optional weekend tournaments. Ken Larsen has been coaching chess teams for over 30 years, leading CFSD students to local, state and national tournaments. Since this is only a 1hr. class, students may go to study hall after chess until 4:15pm.

WHY THINGS FLY

Embark on a thrilling journey through the fascinating world of aeronautics in our "Why Things Fly" class! Join Bob Ray, who has conducted hundreds of kite, flight & rocketry classes in schools around the country as he brings his unique and colorful flying gadgets to us! This engaging course is designed for middle school students curious about the science and engineering behind flight. From birds soaring in the sky to the marvel of human-made aircraft, students will delve into the principles that make things defy gravity. Kites, tumble wings, and gliders are a few of the projects we will work on and under the right conditions launch Bob’s Giant Kite Show!

PHOTOGRAPHY

FRIDAY - 2:45PM - 4:15PM

Students taking this course will learn beginner to advanced techniques in the world of photography. Skills learned in this class will include lighting techniques, composition, learning to shoot in manual mode, and much much more! Mr. Jess has been a professional commercial photographer for over 35 years. Students can continue on in subsequent quarters to gain more experience and a deeper understanding of increasingly advanced photography techniques. Cameras will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own if they wish. Pair this with Mr. Jess's Photoshop & Graphic Design class (Wednesday before school) and learn to edit and manipulate your photos!

AZ SPORTS SPECIALISTS - TRACK & FIELD PRE-SEASON TRAINING

FRIDAY - 2:45PM - 4:15PM

AZ Sports Specialists Track & Field was developed to introduce young athletes to understanding technical development and fundamental techniques with safety and focusing on fun! Using special equipment, our exercises and drills will prepare athletes for a future in cross-country, track and field events, distance running, while inspiring a love for running and being active. The fundamentals of body positioning, stride, proper stretching, and cool-down techniques are all covered in this unique program. Participants will put it all together for one fun-filled day at the end of the session track meet! Come get ready for the 4th quarter season with us!

7/8 - INTERSCHOLASTIC GIRLS BASKETBALL

M, T, W, TH - 2:45PM - 4:15PM

Join the Esperero Canyon Eagle's Basketball team! Practice will focus on skill development, conditioning, teamwork, and game strategy. Students will learn dribbling, shooting, passing, and defensive techniques. Coaches prioritize player development over winning, and everyone gets a chance to play in games. Our teams will focus on building team spirit and sportsmanship. Players are encouraged to support each other, respect opponents, and demonstrate good sportsmanship on and off the court. All skill levels can participate and enjoy this sport. The interscholastic team will compete against other teams in the Northwest League!

Boys in the 6th grade are invited to join the intramural Soccer team! Emphasis will be on team and individual skills, game strategies, participation and sportsmanship. Athletes will compete against other area rivals.

6/7/8 - INTERSCHOLASTIC CO-ED WRESTLING

M, T, W, TH - 2:45PM - 4:15PM

All 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, male or female, are invited to register. To be a good wrestler, you do not need outstanding athletic ability, but, you must possess a good attitude for learning. Students will have the opportunity to compete against other schools in the Northwest League.

COMMUNITY SCHOOLS POLICY INFO, MIDDLE SCHOOL

DISCIPLINE - The Community Schools Program adheres to the CFSD Student Discipline Matrix, which can be accessed through the following link: https://policy.azsba.org/asba/browse/catalina/catalina/JK-E. Community Schools reserves the right to exclude a student from a Community Schools activity if it is established that the student has violated any provision outlined in the student discipline policies, rules, and/or regulations.
Additionally, the Community Schools staff may exercise discretion in removing a student if such action is deemed to be in the best interest of the activity or the school as a whole.
 

PLEASE REGISTER PROMPTLY - All activities are first-come, first-served basis and often fill quickly.

ATTENDANCE - Attendance is taken for all Extended Day Activities & absences must be phoned in by parents to the school office by 2:00 p.m. the day of the class.

LATE FEE - A $15 late fee will be applied after the registration deadline.

LATE PICK-UP FEE - A $2 per minute supervision fee will be charged for those who remain on campus after 4:30pm.

REFUNDS/CHANGES - When dropping out of activities after the first class, you will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be given after the 2nd day of class. There will be a $10 change fee for any class changes. No refunds if we remove your student from a class.

WAIT LISTS - If a class you wanted to register for is FULL, please make sure you add the “Waitlist” class to your cart to ensure you are contacted if a spot becomes available. All waiting list requests are dated, time-stamped, and entered accordingly.

WALKING HOME - If your student walks home from school on a regular basis and would like to do so after an Extended Day Activities, please provide a note giving your student permission to walk home to your class coordinator.  We will keep it on file for the school year. If we do not have a written note, we will not allow students to walk home after Extended Day Activities.

FEES FOR CLASSES, ATHLETICS, OUTDOOR ADVENTURES AND FIELD TRIPS - All fees are due at the time of enrollment, prior to the start of the program. Contact Community Schools for information on payment plans or fee reductions. Fee reductions may be available based on combined family income.

NSF CHECKS - A $25 bank processing fee will be assessed for any returned checks.
