Catalina Foothills School District’s commitment to 21st Century Learning continues after school with Community Schools’ elementary programs.
Afterschool enrichment opportunities include special activities and classes for students on early release days. Afterschool classes and camps extend into the later afternoon hours to broaden lifelong learning options for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Special programs through Community Schools serve as avenues for learning new skills and experiencing meaningful activities during school vacations and weekends.

CHESS---Grades: K-5 ---Fee: $63--- NOTE: Class ends at 2:35

No prior experience is necessary. Instruction begins at the child’s entry level. Chess has been proven to enhance academic achievement and is a skill that will last a lifetime. Optional participation in weekend league tournaments will be discussed in chess meetings. Instructor, Ken Larsen, is a competitive chess player and instructor. He has led CFSD students to local, state and national tournaments.

CRAZY CRITTERS--Grades: K-5-- Fee: $120
Get up close with, and learn all about a new group of animals this quarter when Tucson Petting Zoo brings tortoises, rabbits, birds, bugs, etc. Take part in crafts and activities related to learning about these fascinating creatures!

BASKETBALL: --Grades:3-5 -- Fee: $100
Play like a pro! Develop and practice your skills through systematic learning while getting exercise, experiencing teamwork, and building confidence. Coach Jeremy Daniels has almost ten years of experience and conducts camps and clinics across the country.

PLAY-WELL- INTRO TO STEM: --Grades: K-2 -- Fee: $130
Ratchet up your imagination with tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Build engineer-designed projects such as: Fire Trucks, Space Stations, Tugboats, and the Eiffel Tower. Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Yoyos: --Grades: 2-5 -- Fee: $93
Come learn hand eye coordination with Build a Skill Yoyo! Students will build their own yoyo, learn tricks and much more. Instructor Jess Garcia, has been teaching yoyo skills to large groups of students for 15+ years. Students will be taking home two different yoyo’s in this class. No experience is required.

FIRST Lego League PREVIEW---Mondays, August 13 & 20 AT VENTANA VISTA

3:00-5:45 --Grades: 4-5 --Fee: $27 ---

The Preview Class is a “test flight” for the full 14-week team mission. This year’s teams will design and program a LEGO Mindstorms robot to the accomplish tasks like mining an asteroid, building and supplying a space colony, and cleaning up space trash. The Preview Class is an opportunity for students to see if they have the focus, persistence, self-direction, and ability to work with others to enjoy working towards the goal of competing in a regional tournament in December. Team members must commit to weekly meetings on their scheduled days and may choose to attend additional sessions. Teams for the full competition season are selected from the FLL PREVIEW CLASS participants.

KIDSTAGE WORKSHOP --Tuesdays --Grades:K-5 --Fee: $79 --Six-week class
Our fast-moving and fun workshop will have your kids exploring the many facets of theater through fun, thought-provoking and stimulating theater games and activities! No acting or theater experience is necessary and first-time students are encouraged to attend.

INTRAMURAL FRISBEE ---Tuesdays ---Grades: 3-5 ---Fee: $72
Learn the rules of the game similar to Ultimate Football but with a frisbee instead. Practice one day per week after school for the fall season. Build team spirit and camaraderie with your teammates. Compete against other CFSD elementary school teams in a District-wide event on October 6th, 2018.

KIDZART ---Wednesdays ---Grades: K-3 ---Fee: $193
With the perfect mix of instruction and creative freedom, each KidzArt class results in wonderfully unique art masterpieces where our KidzArtists’ inspiration brings works of art to life. All quality artist materials are provided.

HIKING CLUB---Thursdays -- Grades: 2-5 --Fee: $45
9/12, 9/19, 9/26, 3-4pm, then 10/3, 3-5pm hike in Sabino Canyon

Come explore the beauty of our unique and curious Arizona environment. Learn outdoor skills that you can utilize at any level! We will discuss Leave No Trace, the hiking 10 essentials, geocaching, and more. We will finish the session with a hike on a local trail to experience the outdoors with our new knowledge. Transportation to and from trailhead will be provided. Guide: Mary Grodman

GOSHINJITSU ---Grades: 1-5---Thursdays, 4:30-6pm
AT SUNRISE DRIVE ELEMENTARY FEE: $110
Goshinjitsu is a practical self-defense art that combines elements of Karate, Judo and Jujitsu into a simple and effective form of martial arts. Classes emphasize traditional martial arts values and principles. Instructor, John McGraugh, has been teaching for Community Schools for many years and studied in Japan for five years.

*Class is a full semester and only based out of Sunrise Drive Elementary. Parents are responsible for transportation

*STEEL DRUMS at Canyon View 4:15 - 5:15---Grade: 5--Thursdays starting August 30 ---Fee: $56
This group is open to any 5th grade student with little or no experience playing steel drums. Students will learn to read and perform music for the steel drums and the culture surrounding steel drum music. Students will be expected to regularly attend rehearsals, scheduled performances and help move equipment when necessary. Student's fees cover a t-shirt, mallets, music and music binder. Ms. Moore-

THE 2018 FLL Challenge

Get ready for the launch of the 2018 international FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (FLL) robotics competition season! Students between the ages of 9 and 15 (if 14 years-old on January 1, 2018) in Grades 4 through 10 are eligible for team membership.

Students who are interested in participating on an FLL team must attend a 2-session FLL PREVIEW CLASS.

The Preview Class is a “test flight” for the full 14-week team mission. This year’s teams will design and program a LEGO Mindstorms robot to the accomplish tasks like mining an asteroid, building and supplying a space colony, and cleaning up space trash. They will also propose an innovative solution to a research question that will advance the human ability to live or work beyond Earth. The Preview Class is an opportunity for students to see if they have the focus, persistence, self-direction, and ability to work with others to enjoy working towards the goal of competing in a regional tournament in December. Team members must commit to weekly meetings on their scheduled days and may choose to attend additional sessions. Some teams advance from regional to state competition in January. First and second place winners at the state tournament are invited to international events in April and May.

Teams for the full competition season are selected from the FLL PREVIEW CLASS participants. Students not on teams for the Fall FLL season are encouraged to participate in FLL-LITE classes later in the year. The FLL-LITE sessions allow students to do robotics missions without having to meet the requirements for competition.

The FLL Robotics program is supervised by Charlotte Ackerman, CFSD Teacher Leader for Science and Engineering Practices in partnership with teachers, high school mentors, parents and community members.

The days and times for the PREVIEW CLASSES and FLL SEASON are:

• Ventana Vista and Canyon View – at Ventana Vista on Mondays 3:00-5:45 (The combined school

Preview Class is on August 13 and 20)

• Sunrise Drive – Tuesdays 3:00-5:45 (Preview Class on August 14 and 21)

• Manzanita – Thursdays 3:00-5:45 (Preview Class on August 16 and 23)

• Esperero, Orange Grove and CFHS - Fridays at 3:00-5:45 (Preview Class on August 17 and August 24).

ECMS and OGMS students can arrange to ride a school bus to Sunrise Drive School by requesting a bus pass when registering.

The full INTO ORBIT FLL season team meetings will begin the week of August 27, 2018 and will continue through the second week in December.
