Catalina Foothills School District’s commitment to 21st Century Learning continues after school with Community Schools’ elementary programs. Afterschool enrichment opportunities include special activities and classes for students on early release days. Afterschool classes and camps extend into the later afternoon hours to broaden lifelong learning options for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Special programs through Community Schools serve as avenues for learning new skills and experiencing meaningful activities during school vacations and weekends.

Girls on the Run Winter Season!
Girls on the Run is an exciting and fun running program that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. Program participants will learn what it means to be strong, confident and connected, and by the conclusion of the program, the girls will be physically and emotionally prepared to complete a 5K run with their teammates. Completing the 5k gives the girls better understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishments and hard work. Crossing the finish line is a moment of realization that the seemingly impossible IS possible.

Early Release

Open to all ability levels, no prior experience necessary. Students build strategy and play games. Opportunities for optional weekend tournaments. Ken Larsen, an instructor for over 30 years and a competitive chess player, has led CFSD students to victories at local, state and national tournaments. REGISTER NOW!

KIDZART --Grades: K - 3 Fee: $150

A KidzArt certified instructor that will guide students through a different project each week. Students will learn how to break projects into simple steps, art terms and vocabulary, as well as experience and learn techniques for varying drawing mediums. Each week students will bring home a different masterpiece all their own. Our curriculum never repeats! No art experience necessary.

PLAYWELL --Grades: K - 2 Fee: $130

Ratchet up your imagination with tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Build engineer-designed projects such as: Fire Trucks, Space Stations, Tugboats, and the Eiffel Tower. Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Get up close with, and learn all about a new group of animals this quarter when Tucson Petting Zoo brings tortoises, rabbits, birds, bugs, etc. Take part in crafts and activities related to learning about these fascinating creatures! REGISTER NOW!

DYNAMITE DANCE --Grades: 3 - 5 Fee: $120
Have a blast dancing and learning during Dynamite Dance. In this dynamic after school program, students will learn the basics of Ballet and Jazz through stretching, across the floor exercises, dance and exciting games. No experience is required. REGISTER NOW!

MIND UNWIND ---Grades: 1 - 3 ---Tuesdays -- Fee: $70
This experience with the Mindfulness Education Exchange, uses fun, age-appropriate and research-based activities, stories, and games to cultivate a range of skills such as focus, awareness, self-regulation, positivity, and kindness. Mindfulness has been shown to help children academically, emotionally, and socially.

INTRAMURAL FLICKERBALL -- Thursdays --Grades: 3 - 5 Fee: $60
Learn the rules of the game similar to Ultimate Frisbee but with a football instead. Practice one day per week after school for the fall season. Build team spirit and camaraderie with your teammates. Compete against other CFSD elementary school teams in a District-wide event on October 7, 2017.

Bold and outspoken, or quiet and shy, Drama Kids International’s fast paced, progressive, developmental curriculum consisting of over 450 lessons with unique drama activities, helps all children to develop their social, acting, public speaking, and leadership skills while nurturing self -confidence, and self-esteem.

STEEL DRUMS BEGINNING at Canyon View 4:15 - 5:15 - Thursdays starting August 30th
This group is open to any 5th grade student with little or no experience playing steel drums. Students will learn to read and perform music for the steel drums and the culture surrounding steel drum music. Students will be expected to regularly attend rehearsals, scheduled performances and help move equipment when necessary. Student's fees cover a t-shirt, mallets, music and music binder.

FIRST Lego League Preview

Community Schools offers opportunities to participate in the international FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (FLL) robotics competition to students in grades 4 through 9. The minimum age for 4 ^th graders is 9 years and maximum age for high school students is 15 (if 14 years-old on January 1, 2017). Each elementary school will field one or two 7-8-member teams for the 2017 HYDRO DYNAMICS challenge under the supervision of CFSD robotics teachers Charlotte Ackerman and Jennifer DeBenedetti. Teams of students from both middle schools and the high school will meet at Sunrise Drive School. All teams will need a parent or community member volunteer coach and/or mentors.

In the FLL HYDRO DYNAMICS challenge, teams will learn all about water – how we find, transport, use, or dispose of it. Each team will also design, build, and program an autonomous LEGO MINDSTORMS robot to solve a set of related missions for the Robot Game. FLL encourages students to think like scientists and engineers and honor important CORE VALUES. The competition is fun and friendly. Teams share ideas and learn from and support each other as they discover solutions and meet challenges.

Students who are interested in participating on an FLL team must attend a 2-session FLL PREVIEW class. The preview class allows students to experience the kind of programming and engineering problem-solving and research work they will do in the full 14-week FLL season. It is also an opportunity for students to demonstrate the skills they have for team membership. To enjoy the time commitment and challenge of being prepared for competition, students need a high level of focus, persistence, self-direction, and ability to work with others. Team members must commit to weekly meetings on their scheduled days, attendance at a regional tournament on the first Saturday in December, and possible travel to the Arizona state tournament at Arizona State University (ASU) in early January. Some extra sessions to prepare for tournaments will be offered, but attendance at these is optional.

Teams for the competition season will be identified from the FLL PREVIEW class participants. Students not on teams for the Fall FLL season are encouraged to participate in FLL-LITE classes later in the year. The FLL-LITE sessions allow students to gain skills and do robotics missions without having to meet all the requirements for competition.

The days and times for the PREVIEW CLASSES and FLL SEASON are:

Manzanita and Sunrise Drive – Mondays 3:00-5:45 (Preview Class on August 14 and 21);

Canyon View and Ventana Vista – Wednesdays 3:00-5:45 (Preview Class on August 16 and 23);

Esperero Canyon, Orange Grove and CFHS - Fridays at 3:00-5:45 (Preview Class on August 18 and August 25). Esperero Canyon and Orange Grove students can ride a school bus to Sunrise Drive School, but must notify Community Schools to arrange a bus pass when registering.

The full FLL Season team meetings will begin the week of August 28, 2017 and will continue through the second week in December. The fee for the full season will be $225.

Tucson Petting Zoo - Monday, October 9

Join us in visiting some awesome animals! Tucson Petting Zoo specializes in exotic animals from bugs to capybaras as well as more traditional animals such as goats, chickens, etc.. Fee: $35

Children’s Museum - Tuesday, October 10

Explore, play, and discover with Community Schools in a fun-filled day at the Tucson Children’s Museum! Learn through hands-on playing in exhibits designed to expand the mind. Fee: $40

Dave and Busters - Wednesday, October 11

Join us in a whirlwind afternoon of games and fun! Participants will receive a playing card with tokens along with access to unlimited video games. Fee: $50

Pumpkin Patch & Creative Juice - Thursday, October 12

For the first part of the day, welcome fall as you pick a pumpkin, explore the “straw mountain,” visit animals in the petting zoo, and more. The second half of the day, Creative Juice will be joining us at Manzanita Elementary. Participants will create a fall inspired canvas painting to take home at the end of the day. Fee: $60

UA Sky School - Friday, October 13

Spend a day on Mt. Lemmon with University of Arizona graduate students! We will be using the unique “sky island” environment in the Catalina Mountains to explore a new variety of science based projects. Please bring a jacket, closed toe shoes and bring a sack lunch and a water bottle. Fee: $60

FALL BREAK OUTDOORS

Caving - Monday, October 9

Less than 3 miles and 500ft elevation change. Low to moderate physical exertion. Suitable for Beginners. No flat soled shoes permitted. Caving is like hiking on all fours! Spend the afternoon exploring the underground wonders of Peppersauce Cave. See cool cave formations, an underground lake, and shimmy your way through the rabbit hole! Learn why it is important to protect these natural wonders. Please wear very old clothes (you will get extremely muddy), bring a flashlight, change of clothes, garbage bag, sack lunch and water. Sabino Canyon Hike - Wednesday, October 11

Less than 3 miles and 370ft elevation change. Low to moderate physical exertion. Suitable for Beginners. No flat soled soles permitted. Follow the fields of ferns, wildflowers and butterflies along Upper Sabino Canyon. This riparian area is home to a flowing Sabino Creek with life of all shapes and sizes. Please wear appropriate hiking clothes, bring a sack lunch and a water bottle. We will ride the tram on the way up and hike out. Grades: 4-5 Mary Grodman and Jamie Rowan, Guides
