Catalina Foothills School District’s commitment to 21st Century Learning continues after school with Community Schools’ elementary programs. Afterschool enrichment opportunities include special activities and classes for students on early release days. Afterschool classes and camps extend into the later afternoon hours to broaden lifelong learning options for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Special programs through Community Schools serve as avenues for learning new skills and experiencing meaningful activities during school vacations and weekends.

Chess 1:35-2:35pm (NOTE ending time) Grades: K - 5 Fee: $66
Open to all ability levels, no prior experience necessary. Students build strategy and play games. Opportunities for optional weekend tournaments. Ken Larsen, an instructor for over 30 years and a competitive chess player, has led CFSD students to victories at local, state and national tournaments. REGISTER NOW!

KidzArt is back with more ART-Rageous afterschool fun. With the perfect mix of instruction and creative freedom, each KidzArt class results in wonderfully unique art masterpieces where our KidzArtists’ inspiration brings works of art to life. All quality artist materials are provided.

Play-Well Intro to STEM using LEGO 1:35-3:00pm Grades: K - 2 Fee: $140

Let your imagination run wild with tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Build engineer-designed projects such as Trains, Helicopters, Treehouses, and Beam Bridges. Then use special pieces to create your own unique design! New and returning students can explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGO® building system with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor.

Move to the Beat 1:35-3:00pm Grades: K-3 Fee: $90
Come join the Music and Dance Academy for an energetic dance class for boys and and girls that will introduce ballet and jazz with elements of hip hop and singing. This class is designed to promote gross motor development, listening skills, musicality and an introduction to the art of dance. REGISTER NOW!

Brain S.T.E.M. 1:35-3:00pm Grades: 2-5 Fee: $172
How does our bodies process sound? Does light impact what we see? Do our other senses affect how we taste? Using hands-on activities and visual demonstrations, staff from SARSEF will guide participants to discover the fascinating properties about the body and our senses. REGISTER NOW!

Basketball 1:35-3:00pm Grades: 3-5 Fee: $110 (includes t-shirt)

Basketball is a great way to get exercise, learn teamwork, build confidence and have fun! Instructor, Jeremy Daniels, is a skill development trainer and coach for LEAD Athletics. New this quarter: “Basketball Bash”! We will celebrate the end of the session with an evening of basketball at one of our CFSD Schools, playing games against Community Schools’ teams from other CFSD schools. Basketball Bash will be held on Thursday, May 18 from 6:00-8:00pm. Bring your family and friends to cheer you on and check out your basketball skills. REGISTER NOW!

Drama Kids ---Grades K-2 Wednesdays 3:05-4:05pm Fee: $85

Bold and outspoken, or quiet and shy, Drama Kids International’s fast paced, progressive, developmental curriculum consisting of over 450 lessons with unique drama activities, helps all children to develop their social, acting, public speaking, and leadership skills while nurturing self -confidence, and self-esteem. Kickball -- Grades 3-5 Wednesdays 3:05-4:05pm Fee: $50

Goshinjitsu
Goshinjitsu is a practical self-defense art that combines elements of Karate, Judo and Jujitsu into a simple and effective form of martial arts. Classes emphasize traditional martial arts values and principles. Instructor John McGraug has been teaching for Community Schools for many years and studied in Japan for five years.

FIRST Lego League LITE

This five-week class is designed to introduce students to the skills and challenges involved in the annual FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (FLL) international robotics competition. Participants will work individually and in teams to build with LEGOS, program and problem-solving while trying missions from past years. The class provides an opportunity for students to extend their learning in robotics and explore new engineering and programming strategies. The Community Schools FLL Program is supervised by Charlotte Ackerman with assistance from Jennifer DeBenedetti, CFSD’s Teacher Leaders for Science and Engineering.

Spring Break
Field Trips April 3 - 5

CARE will be open April 3 - 5 at Canyon View Elementary

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Drop off and pick up at Canyon View Elementary
  • Check-in 15 minutes prior to departure time
  • Buses will leave promptly at 9:00am on Monday & Tuesday and 8:00am on Wednesday
  • Please provide a sack lunch and water for all trips

  • Monday 4/3:

    UA Sky Center at Mt. Lemmon----Fee: $75

    Spend a day on Mt. Lemmon with University of Arizona graduate students! We will be using the unique “sky island” environment in the Catalina Mountains to explore a variety of science based projects. Please be prepared for cold weather and bring a sack lunch and a water bottle.

    Tuesday 4/4:

    Postal History Foundation and UA Tree Ring Lab--- Fee: $45

    We’re going back in time! Join us as we take a visit to the Postal History Foundation for an in-depth tour filled with activities to teach us about how our mail travels around the world! We will tour the old Naco Post Office from the 1890's, sort mail, hunt through the treasure chest for old stamps, and watch a video on the history of stamps and how the modern stamps are designed. We'll also have the chance to design our own postcard, address it, and mail it in the working post office. Following we will head to the UA’s Tree Ring lab for a docent-led lab tour, a lesson in dendrochronology and some hands on activities to test our new knowledge. Please send your child with a sack lunch and an address to mail their postcard to.

    Wednesday 4/5:

    Arizona Science Center in Phoenix--- Fee: $65

    Enjoy four floors of science at the Arizona Science Center in Phoenix. Learn about electricity, outer space and the human body. all while having fun. The science center offers a vast array of hands-on and interactive exhibits that kids of all ages will love! We will walk through their 4-D traveling multi-sensory cinematic exhibit, Planet Shank. Please bring a sack lunch and water bottle.
